GEORGES BRAQUE Fox.
GEORGES BRAQUE
Fox.
Drypoint, 1911. 548x380 mm; 215/8x15 inches, wide (11/2-inch) margins. Edition of 100. Signed in pencil, lower margin. Arches watermark. Printed by Delâtre, Paris. Published by Kahnweiler, Paris. Expertly repaired vertical tear upper right, just over the plate mark, visible mainly on the verso. A brilliant, richly-inked impression of this scarce, important print.
According to Vallier, the title derives from the name (Fox) inscribed in the plate, which was a bar near the Saint-Lazare station in Paris where Apollinaire and his artist friends met (Vallier p. 19). This is also the artist's largest intaglio plate and one of two early, Cubist works published by Kahnweiler. Vallier 6.
