GEORGES CAMPS (1874-1931) [Decorative panel on silk.] Circa 1900.
28 1/2x14 inches. Champenois, Paris.
Condition A: minor foxing in bottom margin.
If Mucha was the unabashed star of all the Champenois artists (it was his work that graced the cover of the Champenois catalogue), the company also had many lesser known artists working on decorative panel projects. Camps and Rossi were among them and some of their works are also printed on silk. Just as with Mucha's silk projects, these images (for both technical and marketing reasons) were also printed in very small runs. When Mucha stopped working at Champenois, the printer asked artists like Camps to continue creating decorative panels featuring beautiful women. If the genius of Mucha was lacking from these later panels, the decorative effect most certainly was not.
