GEORGES ROCHEGROSSE (1859-1938) EXPOSITION DECENNALE DE L'AUTOMOBILE. 1907.
96x45 1/2 inches. Barreau, Paris.
Condition B: restoration and restored losses in margins and image.
Rochegrosse, an academic painter and a book illustrator, was a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais, became an officer of the Legion d'Honeur in 1910 and enjoyed a long association with the Automobile Club of France, designing at least three posters for their yearly shows. For this, his third poster for the organization, announcing the 10th anniversary exposition, he uses an unusual vertical format and takes a different graphic approach from his two earlier posters in 1901. Those earlier images featured strong, allegorical women surrounded by decorative Art Nouveau trappings. Here the figure is softer, more elegant and far more fetching. The event was always held in the Grand Palais, and, as in all the posters, the venue is depicted here, brightly illuminated. Automobile 39.
