GERMAN SCHOOL, 15TH-CENTURY St. Catherine of Alexandria. Woodcut printed in black over brown paste impressed with a grainy material and colored by hand and with stencils in red, blue, white, green, yellow and violet, circa 1460-80. 265x193 mm; 10.5 x 7.625in. Ex- collection Convent of Saint Anna, Bamberg (formerly pasted in a book with ownership notes in ink from the convent). Scattered surface losses and two small holes with related loss upper and lower center near the edge of the print. A unique impression of this print. The early stencil coloring on this print also scarce, according to Hind who defined paste-prints as generally involving white-line metal cut or dotted manner plates. Both Schreiber and Mabbott describe the printas being hand colored and gilt, though most of the coloring is executed with stencils and there is no gilt, rather the golden color is produced with a yellowish pigment. Schreiber dates the print to theNuremberg School, circa 1475, while Field suggests a dating of circa 1460-70 and originating from Augsburg. Schreiber VI. 2833 Y. E25, 000/35,000
