GERSHWIN, GEORGE. Typed Letter Signed, to Benjamin Kasser,

HOW SHOULD CLARINET PLAY OPENING OF "RHAPSODY IN BLUE"? GERSHWIN, GEORGE. Typed Letter Signed, to Benjamin Kasser, explaining how the clarinet is to play the opening and other parts in Rhapsody in Blue, and accounting for the delay in publishing his book of songs. 1 page, 4to, personal stationery, olive-gray paper; folds. With the original envelope. (MRS) New York, 12 February 1932

  • Notes: "The opening trill of the RHAPSODY IN BLUE should be played as the clarinet plays it on the record. That is to say, start it rather slowly and increase it to a fast trill--and then the run up to B flat should be made rapidly.
"In answer to your second request about the other trills on the first page, if you listen carefully to the Whiteman record, I am sure you will understand . . . .
". . . There has been a long delay on the book of songs . . . due to the fact that the man who was to do the illustrations passed away. Everything is in readiness now, however, and I believe the book will be out in about a month."
