Folio, 363x234 mm, 17th-century calf with later morocco lettering piece, spine ends chipped, few stains on covers, front joint partly cracked and chipped; occasional toning and light foxing, many illustrations unobtrusively captioned in ink in later hand, single small wormhole in blank lower outer corners through first half of volume, preliminary gatherings b and c possibly supplied at an early date, restoration in blank upper outer corner of title and next 5 leaves and in blank lower margin of the 14 leaves after that, clean tear across m4, large portion of 2s6 torn out with substantial text loss. Signature of the biologist Talbot H. Waterman (1914-2010), noted for his research on the vision and navigational faculty of aquatic animals, dated 1939 on front free endpaper.
