Red and black chalk on cream laid paper. 94x193 mm; 3 3/4x7 5/8 inches. Partial gryphon or dragon watermark. Ex-collection Heinrich Wilhelm Campe, according to a pencil annotation verso (see Lugt 1391); Strähnz, Leipzig, ink stamp verso (not in Lugt). With an attribution to "Cassani" in pencil, verso.
Cassana was active as a still life and portrait painter in Venice. Early still life drawings, such as the current work, are extremely rare. The attribution to this otherwise not very well known artist might therefore be taken at face value.
