Giovanni Antonio Magini (1555-1617)

Continuatio Ephemeridum Coelestium Motuum.

Venice: Apud Haeredem Damiani Zenarii, 1607.
First edition, quarto; two parts in one volume, with divisional title page; ephemerides from 1610 through 1630, large woodcut printer's device to title page; bound in full contemporary limp parchment; rare at auction; 8 3/4 x 6 1/4 in.

Paduan mathematician Magini corresponded with all of the great astronomers of his day, including Brahe, Clavius, Kepler and cartographer Abraham Ortelius. He had some different ideas about the arrangement of the heavens, asserting a geocentric universe with 11 rotating spheres. He was unimpressed with Galileo's identification of mountains on the moon and moons of Jupiter. Ironically the Maginus lunar crater was named in his honor in 1935.
