GIOVANNI BATTISTA TIEPOLO (CIRCLE OF)
(Venice 1696-1770 Madrid)
A Group of Punchinellos Cooking.
Pen and brown ink and wash on cream laid paper. 206x337 mm; 8 1/8x13 1/4 inches. Inscribed "Tiepolo" in ink, lower left recto. The letters IV (?) counter mark.
According to George Knox, the current sheet is likely from the studio of Giambattista Tiepolo, not that of his son, Giovanni Domenico, despite the latter's proclivity for Punchinello subjects. The current drawing is based on G. B. Tiepolo's drawing in the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris (see Brugerolles, Les dessins vénetiens, Paris, 1990, p. 51).
