Grimaldi was a well-traveled and multi-faceted Italian painter, draughtsman, printmaker and architect. He trained in the circle of the Carracci family in Bologna and later made his way to Rome, where he was appointed architect to Pope Paul V (1605-21) and was also patronized by succeeding popes. Towards 1648 he was invited to France by Cardinal Mazarin (1602-1661), and for about two years was employed in building for that minister and for Louis XIV, and in fresco painting in the Louvre. Grimaldi returned to Rome around 1650 where he remained for the rest of his career. He was appointed director of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome and during his later career executed engravings and etchings from his own landscape designs and from those of Titian and the Carracci. The current drawing is likely a study for one of these later landscape etchings by Grimaldi.
