GLORIA STAVERS (1927-1983) Contact Sheet, Jim Morrison (1943-1971). 1967.

GLORIA STAVERS (1927-1983)

Contact Sheet, Jim Morrison (1943-1971). 1967.
Silver print, the image measuring 229x197 mm; 9x7¾ inches, the sheet 254x203 mm; 10x8 inches, with Stavers' stamp on verso.

Gloria Stavers was the editor in chief of 16 magazine from 1958 to 1975. A pop culture and rock music periodical aimed to capture the attention and affection of teenage girls, Stavers developed the editorial style of 16 to portray a more personal, intimate view of the stars it featured. An astute journalist, publishing visionary, and photographer, Stavers was a pioneer in the male-dominated music journalism industry.

Of Morrison, Stavers writes, "Jim is singing and you realize that it's a combination of him, the way he looks and moves, and his sound that has completely turned you on. His voice is like spirals of flame, and beautiful red and yellow colors seem to fly out of his fingertips" ( 16 Magazine, 6 November, 1967).

  • Condition: This 1967 contact sheet of Jim Morrison (1943-1971) is overall in very good condition with clear contrasts and fine details.

The surface evidences expected slight imperfections associated with contact sheets, including superficial handling creases and impressions. The most visible inconsistency is a tiny scratch with emulsion loss (torso) on the very left strip on the third frame (out of 34) from the bottom.

Otherwise, it is possible to notice a few scattered, superficial lineal impressions entering some images, but most inconsistencies are primarily confined to the black margins and visible under close examination in strong, raking light. As such, they do not detract from the powerful images themselves.

The verso is faintly soiled, with Gloria Stavers' stamp.

Stavers was the editor in chief of 16 magazine from 1958 to 1975.
