- Notes: A lengthy letter concerning legal matters over Mrs. Rawlins's properties in Washington and Connecticut. General Rawlins, Grant's aide-de-camp and later Chief of Staff of the Army and Secretary of War, died in 1869 from consumption. Hillyer served briefly on Grant's staff during the Civil War.
