GRANT, ULYSSES S. Autograph Letter Signed, "U.S. Grant / General," to Treasury Auditor Ezra B. French, requesting an opportunity to examine records from 1863 relating to pay for a Colonel who was under his command at the time. 1 1/2 pages, 8vo, ruled paper, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; mounted to board trimmed to size and cut with a window allowing view of text on verso, moderate foxing overall. Washington, 16 December 1867

  • Notes: "Col. T. Lyle Dickey, whos[e] services in the late rebellion were mostly rendered immediately under my command, has just shewn me a letter from the Auditor advising him of the fact that he had drawn pay for the month of Feb''y /63 . . . , and notifying him to return the amount overdrawn.
    "I know the Colonel well enough to feel thoroughly assured that he never did such a thing knowingly and he thinks even now that there may be some mistake about it. . . ."
    Theophilus Lyle Dickey (1811-1885) commanded the 4th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, mustered into service on September 26, 1861, serving under Grant during the battles of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson.
