GREAT SEAL OF THE CONFEDERACY (CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Fine early electrotype reproduction in copper of the Great Seal of the Confederate States,
GREAT SEAL OF THE CONFEDERACY (CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) Fine early electrotype reproduction in copper of the Great Seal of the Confederate States, 90-mm in diameter; housed in a metal-ringed circular glass case set into a satin-lined morocco folding box. Np, circa 1873
- Notes: with --Group of photocopies containing a letter from the English engraving firm of J.S. & A.B. Wyon, asserting that the seal presented is an exact replica of the seal produced by that firm for the Confederate States, plus typed transcripts of letters and excerpts from books regarding the seal. The transcripts contain a notice stating that John T. Pickett "had some electroplates of the seal made and sold them for the benefit of Confederate widows and orphans." Present here is one of the copper copies made to the order of Pickett. The letter from the Wyon firm is dated 1874, so the electrotype copies were probably made some time during the prior year.
