GREEN, ANNA KATHARINE. The Leavenworth Case: A Lawyer's Story.

GREEN, ANNA KATHARINE. The Leavenworth Case: A Lawyer's Story. Folding illustration and in-text diagram. 8vo, original beige cloth, decorated in black, scattered soiling, spine tanned; front hinge tender, occasional minor foxing, fold-out illustration free of tears, LMS bookplate laid-in, additional bookplate of Adrian Goldstone on front pastedown; preserved in a custom 1/4 cloth felt-lined drop-back case. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1878

  • Notes: first edition of the author's first book. Generally regarded as the first important American detective novel (with a nod to Metta Victoria Victor's The Dead Letter of 1867), The Leavenworth Case "may fairly be called the father of the modern detective story. Poe discovered the idea, but Anna Katherine Green gave the story its pattern and garments" (Grolier American 60). Glover & Greene 212; Lilly Detective Fiction 81; Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.
