Grimké, Angelina Emily (1805-1879)
Letters to Catherine E. Beecher in Reply to an Essay on Slavery and Abolitionism.

Boston: Isaac Knapp, 1838.

First edition, 12mo, bound in publisher's half brown cloth spine and paper-covered boards with publisher's printed yellow paper label pasted to front board, light wear, early bold owner's signature on ffep, 7 x 4 1/4 in.

This is the third installment in a series documenting the epistolary conversation between Beecher and Grimké. Born in the American South, Grimké was an impassioned and effective speaker and writer who rose to fame after William Lloyd Garrison published one of her letters in The Liberator. Her advocacy on behalf of the rights of women and Black Americans living under slavery sprung from her understanding of natural rights, familiarity with the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, her own experiences growing up in the South, and her Christian faith. This particular book was published by Knapp, who also printed The Liberator. Catherine Beecher (1800-1878) was an advocate for female education and promoter of kindergarten for younger children. She and Harriet Beecher Stowe were sisters.
