Np Washington, D.C.?, 1919 E250-350 Grimke 1850-1937 , clergyman, civil rights leader, consul and author was the son of a wealthy planter and a slave mother. He and his two other brothers were raised virtually as freemen until the father's death and the onset of the Civil War, when their step-brother returned them to slavery. Following a formal education after the war, Grimke was, for most of his life, pastor of the Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church in Washington D. C. Grimke, his brother Archibald, and W E. B. Du Bois officially separated themselves from Booker T Washington at the Afro-American Council of 1906
