  • Provenance:
The Collection of Covington & Burling LLP
  • Notes:
Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, and the first to fly across the North American continent. Between 1930 and 1935, Earhart set seven women's speed and distance records. On July 2, 1937, she disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world. Earhart embraced her celebrity status and women's rights. She wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences and was instrumental in the formation of the Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots.
