Grover Cleveland

Autograph Letter Signed, as President, to his Postmaster General William Lyne Wilson,

sending signed documents [not present], approving his recommendations, considering what is to be done concerning a complaint from former Postmaster General Wilson S. Bissell, returning a letter [not present], expressing disbelief at the political platforms advanced in MD and OH, and closing with a remark about strange political bedfellows. 3 pages, 8vo, "Gray Gables" stationery, written on first three pages of folded sheet; horizontal fold. With the original envelope, addressed in holograph.

Buzzards Bay, 23 August 1895.

  • Notes: "I return you the papers in Tekamah [NE] and Rye [NY; likely postmaster appointments] with my initials in the farm[?] papers in accordance with your suggestions. I also return papers in Murphyston[?] and Selma[?]. I fully approve your action in both of these cases.
"I do not find the private mem[orandum] of Mr. [Wilson S.] Bissell as to Middletown to which you refer as 'inclosed'. I remember however the embarrassment caused by Senator [J. Donald?] Cameron's painting, both in the former administration and the present one. I do not exactly know what ought to be done but will consider it.
"I also return Mr. Campbell's letter. There is something I have heard or inferred about him that has not made me very swift to appoint him to plan. I don't know clearly what it is.
"I rub my eyes to find whether I am dreaming when I survey[?] the platforms &c in Maryland and Ohio.
"Surely we find numbers[?] by the side of strange political bedfellows."
