  • Notes: "Handsome work" on Guay, who studied to become a jeweler in Paris. He was greatly influenced by painter François Boucher under whom he worked for a time. Inspired by the famous engraved gem collection by Pierre Crozat, he became a highly accomplished engraver, encouraged and aided by Jeanne Antoinette, Marquise de Pompadour, whose own work is also treated here. Guay eventually became the first gem engraver admitted to the Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture of Paris.
