Guidobaldo del Monte (1545-1607)

Planisphaeriorum Universalium Theorica.

Pesaro: Apud Hieronymum Concordiam, 1579.
First edition, small folio, illustrated with large woodcut to title page and text diagrams throughout; bound in contemporary full limp parchment; printed on hearty paper and bearing deep type impressions throughout (water damage to top inside corner with mildew and damp damage to the paper; last few signatures with signs of similar paper weakening and some tears; binding shifted, distorting the shape of the spine; institutional stamps to title and several text leaves); this copy without errata found in others, although without evidence of its former presence or removal; 10 x 7 1/2 in.

Monte was born in Pesaro to a military father. He studied math in Padua and was friendly with Tasso. He was a correspondent and later a patron of Galileo. In this particular work, Del Monte is writing about stereographic projection, which allows us to geometrically transpose a sphere and represent it as a plane, very useful for cartography and astronomy.
