GUO CHAN

["SHANGHAI BEACH."] Circa 1930.
20x30 inches. Shanghai Printing House.
Condition B+: tears and losses at edges and in margins. Paper.
The "Bund", a stretch along Shanghai's Huangpu River was the first area of that city to be developed by Western interests in the years following the opium wars, and the fantastic architecture represents a blend of all the European traditions. Here battleships, bi-planes, buildings and bridges as well as junks, airplanes and a panorama of the Bund are colorfully depicted beneath a dramatic lavender and pink sky.
