La Moulin de la Galette, which was built around an authentic Montmartre windmill, existed before the more famous Moulin Rouge opened in 1889, and it remained highly popular. This poster, advertising a ball at the end of the Parisian horseracing season is a witty, tongue-in-cheek spoof of Lautrec's masterpiece for the Moulin Rouge, with the silhouette of the crowd, a dancer in the center of the image and man in the foreground overseeing the spectacle. However, in the place of La Goulue, Dollin depicts a dancer riding a hobbyhorse. Her attire suggests that the poster was printed in the years just prior to the First World War. Ironically, during this time, the Moulin Rouge itself was in decline and its owner was becoming more and more succesful making money gambling on horses! Rare.
