Gwen John studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where in the tradition of artistic bohemianism, she and her fellow pupils relied upon one another for financial support and shared models and studios. She later spent time in Paris, where she crossed paths with important artists such as Constantin Brâncusi, Henri Matisse, and Auguste Rodin, who she became the muse and lover to.

She remained steadfast in her artistic vision, her style relatively consistent throughout her career. Despite her myriad ties to artists throughout the early-20th century, John frequently wrote of a desire for solitude and a need for complete focus to create her work. Her paintings from the early 1920s mark the artist's last real period of social engagement and exhibition before she became reclusive in the later years of her life.

Two Vases of Flowers is a stellar example of John's focused practice, in which she painted primarily still lifes and portraits of female models. It is a particularly lively and distinctive work by the artist, whose paintings often mirrored her placid, introspective nature in hue and perspective.
