HAGEL, OTTO (1909-1973) Select group of 4 photographs from the series "New York Stock Exchange."

HAGEL, OTTO (1909-1973)
Select group of 4 photographs from the series "New York Stock Exchange." Silver prints, 13x10 inches (33x25.4 cm.), each with Hagel's credit/series/date hand stamp on verso. 1938; printed 1980s

  • Notes: The New York Stock Exchange traditionally banned cameras, which fostered the idea of secretive processes. In 1938, President Martin (the first paid president of the NYSE), invited Hagel, a LIFE photographer, to produce the most in depth and complete record of the stock exchange at that time.
These prints were made under the supervision of Hansel Mieth Hagel, in a limited (but not numbered edition), by Edward Dyba, who also printed for Imogen Cunningham and Dorothea Lange, among other notable California photographers.
"A New Deal Starts as Stock Exchange Booms" (LIFE, 1938).
  • Condition: All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues.
