Illustrating and Defending The Great Doctrine of a Particular Providence in The Entire Overthrow of The City of Cape Haytien, Which Occurred May The 7th, 1842 in The Republic of Hayti. 114 pages. • Notes: first edition of a very scarce book, a presentation copy from the author to his brother-in-law, dated in the month of publication. Bird was a Wesleyan missionary who lived on the island. This work is an epic poem on the earthquake of 1842, in which the entire city of Cape Haytien was destroyed. It is of special interest in that the author has provided copious footnotes on the disaster with first-hand information. Only a small number of copies of this work were published. Bird also wrote a biography of Toussaint L'Ouverture and another long poem, "The Victorious" on the death of Lincoln.
