(HAITI.) Sonthonax, Léger-Félicité. Commission of the mulatto general Villate as commander of Cap-Français. Partly-Printed Document Signed, "Sonthanax," as civil commissioner of Saint-Domingue, countersigned by Etienne LaVeaux and 3 others, on form illustrated with arms of la République Française, and certified with two contemporary inked stamps. One sheet, 18 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches; minor wear, pinhole at intersection of folds. Cap-Français, 10 October 1793

  • Notes: During early years of the French Revolution, Sonthonax was the civil commissioner of Saint-Domingue, which would soon become Haiti. He presided over a chaotic period of conflicts between royalists and revolutionaries, and between whites, free people of color, and slaves in full revolt. He is most remembered for freeing the colony's slaves on 29 August 1793, in an effort to gain the support of Toussaint L'Ouverture's forces against the Spanish.
This document is signed by two important figures in the early Haitian revolution, and formalized the rise to power of a third. It appoints the mulatto general Villate, a rival of L'Ouverture, as military commander of the Cape. It is countersigned by French military leader Etienne LaVeaux, who later assumed the governorship. In 1796, Villate would depose LaVeaux and assume the governorship for himself, but he held power only briefly before being deposed in turn by L'Ouverture.
