(HAITI.) WIMPFFEN, FRANCIS ALEXANDER STANISLAUS. Voyage to Saint Domingo, in the Years 1788, 1789, and 1890. . . .Translated from the original manuscript, which has never been published by J. Wright. Large hand-colored folding map preceding the title-page. 371 pages. 8vo, contemporary full speckled calf, board edges rubbed; front joint cracked but sound. London: Cadell, 1797

  • Notes: scarce, no copy at auction in 20 years. The author was present during the beginnings of the Haitian uprising and revolution. The account is notable for the author's wry and sometimes satiric comments on the wealthy French plantation owners and their attitudes toward their slaves, the "gens de coleurs," and Hatian customs in general.
