  • Provenance:
Terry Dintenfass Gallery, New York (label)
    Private collection, Florida.
  • Notes:
This charming European street scene is a beautiful and scarce example of Hale Woodruff's early painting from France. Painting sales and the William E. Harmon Foundation bronze prize in 1926 werre enough funds to pay for Woodruff's passage to Paris in the fall of 1927. He painted a series of similar landscapes focusing on the architecture in medieval cities, first around Paris and later in Provence. In the fall of 1931, Woodruff returned to the US and began teaching at Atlanta University. He exhibited a number of these French paintings in the annual Harmon Foundation exhibitions in New York, beginning in 1928.
