HALE WOODRUFF (1900 - 1980) Le Carrousel de Paris.

HALE WOODRUFF (1900 - 1980)
Le Carrousel de Paris.

Oil on canvas, 1927. 330x406 mm; 13x16 inches. Signed and dated "27" in oil, lower right. Titled in pencil on the upper stretcher bar.

Provenance: ex-collection Olivia Anderson, Indianapolis, the artist's sister-in-law; private collection.

This striking Parisian landscape is one of the earliest paintings by Hale Woodruff to come to auction. After winning the Harmon Foundation bronze medal in 1926, he arrived in Paris in the fall of 1927 in time to visit Monet's memorial exhibition at the Jeu de Paume, and began attending classes at the Académie Scandinave and Académie de l'Art Moderne. By January 1928, other Parisian paintings, Pont Neuf and Quai de Montebello, were included in the Harmon Foundation's First Annual Exhibition. Woodruff painted a view of the smaller Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, Paris, built by Napoleon III in 1806-08 between the Louvre and the Tuilieries. Amaki/Brownlee p. 101.

  • Condition: Widespread but unobtrusive craquelure throughout the image. Linen patch repair, upper right corner verso, backing a pair of small and punctures (1/8- inch each in dimater) in sky, to the left of the far tree, the upper left corner recto. This repair is unobtrusive and found only on the recto upon close examination - not in-painted, unprimed canvas shows through the small holes recto.

Several thin spots in the thin linen canvas, only visible upon holding the painting up to light.

Varnished. No evidence of in-painting under blacklight examination. Otherwise in good condition, undisturbed and stretched on the original stretcher bars. Unframed.
