First edition in English, second issue; after original German-language editions printed in Budapest in 1885 and 1891; octavo, illustrated with five text diagrams and 10 full-page plates featuring mounted samples of marbled papers; the first 5 plates each with a large central example, the following 5 with 6 small square samples of marble patterns, each identified by name; with appendix and 2 ad leaves listing marbling materials available through the American Bookbinder shop in Buffalo; paper-covered publisher's binding decorated with an embossed marble pattern and fancy gilt lettering (worn, spine essentially perished; front board detached, back starting; 9 1/4 x 5 3/4 in.

Halfer's delightfully practical guide to the art of marbling paper and book edges provides detailed descriptions of material, pigments, equipment, tools and techniques. The text was translated from German into English by University of Pennsylvania graduate Dieck, who studied chemistry and found his career as a newspaper editor.
