(HAMILTON, ALEXANDER.) [Lockwood, Henrietta; artist.] A View of the Spot Where General Hamilton Fell at Weehawk.

(HAMILTON, ALEXANDER.) [Lockwood, Henrietta; artist.] A View of the Spot Where General Hamilton Fell at Weehawk. Pencil drawing, 14 x 18 inches, on heavy artist board; minor foxing. [Scipio, NY], circa 1845-46

  • Notes: This attractive piece of schoolgirl art is a faithful pencil copy of a now-scarce engraving by Caleb Ward done circa 1830, depicting the scene of Alexander Hamilton's fatal shooting by Aaron Burr, which took place in Weehawken, NJ in 1804. An inscription on the backing of the frame reads "Penciled by Henrietta Lockwood at Wanzer's Academy about 1845 or 1846." Henrietta Lockwood (1828-1917) was a lifelong resident of Cayuga County, NY; she married Richard Merrit in 1847. Around this time, Richard Wanzer operated a Quaker academy at Scipio in Cayuga County, also known as the Poplar Ridge Seminary. The paper bears a small embossed stamp reading "Extra Superfine Board, London." Old Sturbridge Village holds a drawing on this paper stock dated August 1844, so the provenance holds together well.
