Notes: "... I believe you are apprised of the fact that the printing of the first volume brought my mother in debt... under these circumstances she has been advised to make an application to Congress, as the publication of the papers are interesting to American statesmen, as being intimately connected with the most momentous... portions of our history, the war of Independence, and the organization of the government under the federal constitution... As the sons of old Federalists, we are equally interested in the publication of their papers; they will throw more light on the early history of federalism than any exhibition which has been heretofore presented, while they will prove to the country that any other system of measures than those of federalism could not have been adopted with success..."
In 1846, Congress granted Elizabeth Hamilton $20,000 for her husband papers, funding the 7-volume set which was published in 1850 (see 29th Congress, 1st Session, Senate Bill 156).
