Between 1926 and 1936, Shaw was the visionary editor of the most important pulp magazine in the States, Black Mask, founded by H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan in 1920. Encouraged by Shaw, Hammett became a literary star and master of the "hard-boiled" school of detective fiction thanks to his ground-breaking character, The Continental Op.
