HARDING, WARREN G. Group of 4 Typed Letters Signed, "WGHarding," as Senator, to his brother-in-law Ralph T. Lewis, on various, mostly personal, topics. • Notes: 21 April 1917: ". . . I think the suggestion to employ commercial travellers in the secret service is a very practical one and I have already transmitted this suggestion to the Department of Justice in a personal interview. I . . . did talk over the matter with the Attorney General and he promised to convey the suggestion to the Chief of the Secret Services Department. . . . "
11 August 1917: ". . . I note your reference to the $25,000 subscription and would be very glad to undertake to secure it except for the fact that war taxes and the high, distressing situation relating to industrial affairs are not very conducive to such subscriptions at this time. Moreover, I would not wish to undertake such a thing with a proposition to reward my endeavor in naming the hotel. It is mighty complimentary for you to propose such a thing, but frankly I think it would be a very great mistake . . . . My own notion about it is that you ought to give it an Indian name. . . ."
