HARDING, WARREN G. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to his personal physician Charles E. Sawyer ("My dear General Sawyer"),

"I AM UNDER A HUNDRED OBLIGATIONS TO [CAMPAIGN MANAGER] DONITHEN" HARDING, WARREN G. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to his personal physician Charles E. Sawyer ("My dear General Sawyer"), sending a letter from their mutual friend French Crow [not present], asking Sawyer to convey to Crow that the Ohio federal judge appointment may be postponed, recommending his campaign manager Hoke Donithen for the position. 1 page, 4to, with integral blank, White House stationery; horizontal fold. (TFC) Washington, 24 July 1922

  • Notes: ". . . [I]t is not urgent to give consideration to the selection of an additional federal judge in the Northern District of Ohio at the present time . . . . Mr. Crow knows how I feel concerning Hoke Donithen. I think Donithen in every way worthy and fitted and capable of holding such a position. . . . Perhaps a way can be found when the time comes to get over the embarrassment involved in this additional bestowal upon my Marion friends. This particular instance illustrates the greatest difficulty there is in exercising the appointing power. I am under a hundred obligations to Donithen, and there are a half dozen or more of exceedingly capable and worthy men seeking the same position . . . ."
