HARDING, WARREN G. Typed Letter Signed, "WGHarding," as Senator, to President of the Pendergrast Company O.S. Rapp ("My dear Rapp"),

HARDING, WARREN G. Typed Letter Signed, "WGHarding," as Senator, to President of the Pendergrast Company O.S. Rapp ("My dear Rapp"), expressing disappointment that common stock did not pay a dividend, correcting newspaper reports that he attended a Railway Banquet, remarking that he would have preferred to address the Senate "on any other subject than the Philippine question," reporting that Mrs. Harding is recovering, and expressing concern about Judge Schofield's health. 1½ page, 4to, United States Senate stationery, written on two sheets; pinholes in top left margin, folds. (SFC) Washington, 31 January 1916

". . . I was not at the Railway Banquet last week, as the newspapers reported. I met Mr. Post at the White House while he was here making arrangements for the President's appearance before the Association. . . . I am sorry to have missed it . . . .
"I appreciate your kind reference to my first speech in the Senate. . . . If I could have chosen to suit my own taste I should have much preferred to make my initial speech on any other subject than the Philippine question, but I felt very much impelled to sound a different note than much of the discussion . . . .
"Mrs. Harding . . . is not very confident of bringing herself to such a condition that she can much participate in the social life of the capital. . . . [I]t does not amount to a great lot anyway. I, myself, think there is much more fun meeting a few intimate friends who play the checks very reasonably close to their abdomens.
"I wish I could read some cheer in your letter relating to Judge Schofield. . . . I am very much convinced that one of the finest fellows we ever had in Marion [OH] has reached the end of his activities.
"Please remember me to the force at the office, and if you meet the eminent pool players at the Club you may say I would enjoy taking a stick with them."
