HARPER, FRANCES E. WATKINS. Sketches of Southern Life.

24 pages. 16mo, original lettered wrappers, some very minor soiling and spotting. Philadelphia, 1873

  • Notes: second edition, first published in the previous year. In this work Aunt Chloe, the narrator, discusses the Civil War and Reconstruction in a series of poetical vignettes. Joan Sherman in her Invisible Poets, says of the author, "Miss Harper's verse is frankly propagandist, a metrical extension of her life dedicated to the welfare of others. She believed in art for humanity's sake." Porter, North American Negro Poets, page 43. Very scarce and rarely encountered.
