HARRISON, WILLIAM HENRY. Autograph Letter Signed, to James Burret, asking for a continuance of a loan as he was unable to sell three boat loads of produce sent down river to New Orleans for prices higher than he could at home. 1 1/2 pages, single 4to sheet; minor separations at folds, a few repaired. North Bend, 2 May 1831

Notes: "I have been waiting for the return of my son Scott who went down the river 8 weeks ago with three boat loads of our produce... Scott has not yet returned but 3 of his hands have just landed who saw him at N Orleans. He had sold the greater part of his cargos but the corn (3000 bushels) lower than he could have got at home for it... I am obliged to ask for a continuance of the loan from the Bank..."
After the War of 1812, Harrison served a few terms in Congress before returning to civilian life in 1828. He was not as successful a businessman as a military or political figure, going into enough debt in a few years to require him to accept a position as the clerk of a local court to pay back his loans. In 1835, he began touring the country with aspirations toward the Presidency.
