HARRISON, WILLIAM HENRY. Letter Signed, "Willm Henry Harrison," as Brigadier General, to Secretary of War James Monroe,

ONE FUTURE PRESIDENT TO ANOTHER HARRISON, WILLIAM HENRY. Letter Signed, "Willm Henry Harrison," as Brigadier General, to Secretary of War James Monroe, requesting that he select either Col. Morrison or Capt. Piatt to serve as Deputy Quarter Master General since appointing both to same position is causing confusion, and requesting that he aid with the problem of Gen. Winchester ordering General Courts Martial without authority or beneficial effect. 1 1/4 pages, 4to, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; separations at horizontal folds repaired verso with tissue, minor chipping at edges. "Head Qrts N.W. Army / Miami Rapids," 20 January 1813

  • Notes: "The appointments of Coll Morrison and Capt. Piatt as Dep'ty QMGenl to this army with equal authority, is calculated to produce the most unfortunate results to the public interest . . . from the eternal clashing with regard to their duties in the field.
"I wish you to be so obliging as to decide between them. There are sound peculiar circumstances which render it impossible for me to have anything to do in the decision.
"Genl Courts Martial have been constantly ordered and acted upon by Genl Winchester upon what authority I know not . . . nor do I believe it to be beneficial. The President may authorize a Colo., in a separate Department to order Courts Martial but in the same army or Department that authority can be vested in one person only without proving destructive to subordination. I must request you to aide upon this subject also."
In September of 1812, Harrison was given command of the Army of the Northwest, replacing Gen. Winchester, who, two days following the writing of this letter, was defeated at Raisin River, after which Harrison built Fort Meigs in preparation for the retaking of Detroit.
