    On August 9, 1945, after the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan's Emperor Hirohito implored his War Council to accept the unconditional surrender terms of the Potsdam Conference; the following day, the Japanese Foreign Ministry notified the Allies that Japan had accepted the Potsdam Declaration. On August 10, 1945, Truman convened a cabinet meeting to discuss Japan's offer of surrender.
