HAVILAND, PAUL (1880-1950)
Stands at a race course. Platinum print, 6 1/2x8 1/4 inches (16.5x21 cm.). 1908-1915

  • Notes: Paul Burty Haviland was the son of a great American porcelain-maker in Limoges. From 1908 until 1915, Haviland became an influential member of the Photo-Secession and a faithful ally of Alfred Stieglitz in his struggle for the acknowledgment of photography and modern art. His work was published in Camera Work. Most of his photographs were bequeathed to the Musée d'Orsay.

In 1996, the Musée d'Orsay published "Paul B. Haviland (1880-1950), Photographe" by Françoise Heilbrun and Quentin Bajac. Besides the Musée d'Orsay, his work is held by many institutions, including the Center for Creative Photography, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Princeton University, the International Center of Photography, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Canada.
