(HAWAII.) [Dole, Sanford B.] Vacuum: A Farce in Three Acts.

(HAWAII.) [Dole, Sanford B.] Vacuum: A Farce in Three Acts. 16 pages. 16mo, self-wrappers; minimal wear, a lone tiny wormhole. [Honolulu, 1885]

  • Notes: The author Sanford Ballard Dole (1849-1926) was at this time a lawyer and member of the Hawaiian legislature. He soon became a key figure in the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, and served as Hawaii''s first president and then territorial governor (his cousin James Dole was the founder of the famous Hawaiian Pineapple Company). Dole published this short play anonymously, but surviving correspondence proves his authorship. The Hawaiian Gazette described the contents: "The characters are evidently representing the ministry and their surroundings. The gold law and the government are very happily satirized." "The first of the pamphlets that satirized political affairs during the Kalakaua era. . . . A humorous sketch in which the king wins in the end"--Forbes 3686. 5 copies in OCLC and none known at auction.
