(HAWAII.) [Ellis, William.] A Journal of a Tour around Hawaii. Folding map, 5 plates. 12mo, contemporary calf; foxing and staining. Boston, 1825
- Notes: first edition. An important early work on the island -- indeed one of the first serious works since Cook's Journal. Ellis explored the region with several other missionaries to research the possibilities of establishing new stations. Of note are the appendices to their experiences, which includes an Hawaiian language vocabulary. "Although well larded with religious exhortations, the book is an invaluable and detailed examination of all aspects of Hawaiian culture as well as descriptive of the geographical features of the island"--Forbes, Hawaiian National Bibliography 600.
