HAWKINS, RICHARD. The Observations of Sir Richard Hawkins Knight, in his Voiage into the South Sea. Anno Domini 1593. [4] (of [6]), 169, [6] pages; lacks title (replaced with facsimile). Folio, 19th-century 1/2 black morocco gilt, rebacked retaining worn original backstrip; scattered minor stains, catalogue cuttings and bookplates on front endpapers. London: J. D. for John Jaggard, 1622
- Notes: first edition of the original narrative of a major English voyage. "The purpose of this venture, even more than in the case of Drake's circumnavigation, was discovery with a view of empire-building... it was the frankest attempt the English had thus far made to find the passage to the Indies by the southwest" (Penrose). Intending to finance the expedition by raiding the coast of South America, Hawkins successfully plundered Valparaiso, but was taken prisoner following his defeat in an engagement with a larger Spanish fleet farther north. "After his release in 1602 he wrote this memoir as a treatise on the conduct of plundering expeditions to Spanish America. In addition to its historical importance the work gives one of the best pictures of Elizabethan sea life that exists"--Streeter sale 2400. Alden 622/66; Borba de Moraes, pages 395-96; Hill, page 140; Penrose, pages 189-91 and 320; STC 12962.
