Emancipated by his father and sent North, He ran away to sea at 15In 1865 He joined the U. S. Revenue Cutter Service, the fore runner of the Coast Guard and quickly rose through the ranks to become commander of several cutters. his most distinguished service was while in command of the Corwin, participating in several rescues, including members of the Greeley expedition. While commanding the Bear, He shipped more than 500 head of reindeer from Siberia to Alaska in order to save the Eskimos who were starving because of the loss of seal hunting. It has been rumored that He was lack London's model for the cruel Captain Wolf Larsen of the Sea Wolf. his brother Patrick was the first Negro Jesuit and the First Negro to earn a doctorate and become president of a Catholic institution.
