In 1936, after finishing her studies as an aspiring sculptor at the School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, Helen Phillips (1913-1995) received a Phelan Traveling Fellowship to study in Paris, where she assimilated many styles, particularly Surrealism. In Paris, she entered Atelier 17, where she would meet her future husband, Stanley William Hayter, and produce engravings that would prove important to her development as a sculptor.
