HELPER, HINTON ROWAN Compendium of the Impending crisis. 8vo, original lettered wrappers, few

chips to spine and edges. New York: Burdick, 1860 Second printing of a condensation of Helper's Impending Crisis. The latter was a notorious book during this period and easily as influential as Uncle Tom's Cabin. It was written, ironically, by a poor Southern white racist, who clearly saw that slavery was a collapsing economic system. Sabin 31270; Hubbard 533 (later editions).
