HELPER, HINTON ROWAN. Nojoque; A Question for a Continent. Thick 8vo original purple cloth; a bit mottled. New York: Carleton, 1867 E300/400 INSCRIBED "James W. Sheffield with the kind respects of the author Hinton Rowan Helper, June 14, 1867." Helper, a South Carolina racist, also wrote "The Impending Crisis," warning of problems inherent in slavery, ironically earning him the disrespect of many fellow Southerners. "Nojoque" is an unabashedly racist work. Helper, an equal opportunity racist, wished to cleanse America of all but whites. Schomburg Collection copy on micro-film; not in Blockson Collection.
