HELPING A CONFEDERATE (CIVIL WAR.) SHERMAN, WILLIAM T. Autograph Note Signed, to Attorney General Alphonso Taft, forwarding the request of George Mooman to be appointed a U. S. Marshal (not present) and recommending him even though he was a Confederate officer. 1 page, folded 8vo sheet; matted and framed. New Orleans, 6 March 1877
- Notes: "... If to have fought in the Confederate Army is a ban, then Mooman's claim is out - for he was a Confederate officer. But I met him in 1863 & 1864 under flag of truce, - also many times since the Civil War - and I honestly believe he will fulfill any office of the U. S. in the strictest sense of honor and loyalty."
